I colori erano già in uso nel 1953 nella bandiera della repubblica Tagika. Questa versione del vessillo, di cui non si hanno notizie precise sul significato, è stata adottata il 14 Novembre 1992. La corona compare anche al centro dello stemma di stato e fa riferimento alla parola persiana tgi da cui prende il nome il popolo tagiko. Sotto la corona si vede un libro aperto sormontato dalle montagne del Pamir su sui sorge il sole. Fasci di cotone e frumento e i colori nazionali fanno da contorno al disegno. Taĝikio, obtenata la dividiĝon de Sovet-Unio, dotiĝas de flago kiu konsistas el tri horizontalaj bendoj ruĝa-blanka-verda kun orita krono kaj sep kvinpintaj steloj metitaj laŭ cirkla arko. La koloroj ŝajnas deveni el malnova flago de Taĝika Respubliko uzita en 1953. La krono de la flago aperas ankaŭ centre de la ŝtata blazono kaj rilatas al la persia vorto "tgi", el kiu la taĝika popolo prenas la nomon. Malfermita libro (simbolo de kulturo) estas surmetata de la montoj de Pamir, sur kiu leviĝas la suno. La nacia koloroj kun faskoj de kotono kaj tritiko konturas la desegnon.
